Atari confirm’s its making a new console

by Matt BleasbyJune 17, 2017

Video game company Atari helped define the electronic entertainment industry from the 1970s to the mid-1980s with its iconic products such as Pong and the Atari 2600, but it hasn’t created a gaming console in over twenty years. Suddenly out of nowhere we had an email from one of Ataris press sides. What did it contain? Well not as much as would have hoped it did. They are keeping there cards close. But they did give us some information so watch out for the articles coming never the less it’s exciting to be on the cusp of this & just checkout the video. Wether it’s a retro play console or a whole new idea it’s looking exciting.

Now, current CEO of Atari, Fred Chesnais, recently shared in an interview with GamesBeat during E3 2017, that the company is finally delving back into the gaming division by creating a new console.

“We’re back in the hardware business,” he said.

Atari teased a new product called the “Ataribox” last week through a non-Atari web site, however, many people believed it to be false, although, little did they know that the video was showcasing a “brand new Atari product years in the making.”

With the console reportedly based on PC tech, Fred Chesnais also expressed that the console’s design is still in its infancy and the official reveal will be announced at a later date.

Judging by the name it could very well be a new console system, however, it seems highly unlikely to find success given the intense competition between Nintendo, Microsoft, and Sony. Both Sony and Microsoft already have bleeding edge tech in their PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X respectively, so it’s hard to imagine Atari will steal market share based on specs alone. Nintendo seems to have a lock on the handheld and under 12 markets, so many are left scratching their heads as to what Atari plans for the Ataribox.

The last console released by Atari was the Jaguar in 1993. It was considered a commercial failure, with only 250,000 units sold before being discontinued in 1996. Atari has since then continued to license their name out to various products, but none of them have been consoles. The only thing that seems to keep the brand alive is the game franchise Roller Coaster Tycoon.

It could be that the Ataribox will turn out to be a miniaturized classic console, like the NES Classic, although critics remain skeptical there will be a sufficient number of nostalgic Atari players to warrant its creation. Nevertheless, you can go to the Ataribox website and sign up to their newsletter to be the first to know more.
